It's a nice touch that Hollywood Juniper, Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka,' is named for the home of the American film industry, because this is a plant that brings drama to any landscape. This shrub is a classic evergreen with an unusual profile — its branches twist and spiral upwards in a way that might make you think they were created by a sculptor. It's an excellent specimen plant that is adaptable to acidic or alkaline soil and needs little extra care or pruning. It also can be used as an informal, free-form hedge or privacy screen, with the flame-like branches providing wide-scale textural interest to a property border or fenceline. Here are a few more reasons to audition this attractive conifer for your garden:

  • The Hollywood juniper is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, from clay to sand.
  • The mature shrub is drought-resistant, and it won't need much supplemental watering once established.
  • It is tolerant of urban pollution as well as salt, making it an excellent choice for city landscapes.

Planting and Care

Planting instructions

Site your Hollywood juniper in a spot that gets at least eight hours of sun a day, in soil that drains well and is never continuously wet. Unpot the shrub and tease out any encircling roots, which can girdle the tree and slowly kill it. Dig a hole that’s as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the shrub in the hole, spreading out the roots. Holding it upright and steady, fill in around it with topsoil that’s been amended with well-rotted compost or manure, tamping down as you go to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly. Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer of an organic mulch, such as bark chips, around the root zone to conserve moisture and hinder weed growth.

Watering and nutrients

Although the Hollywood juniper hates standing in water, it does like soil that is continuously moist, especially when young. For the first year or so, water every few days, unless you receive rain, to help the root system establish itself. The mature bush will only need supplemental watering during times of drought. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release product that is formulated for evergreen trees and shrubs.

Pollination

Like other evergreens, Hollywood juniper trees have cones instead of flowers. Male and female cones are on different trees, and when pollinated, female cones produce berry-like seed cones that are dispersed by the wind.

Pruning

The Hollywood juniper does best when left unpruned. Monitor the shrub for broken, diseased, or damaged limbs, which should be trimmed out when you see them. But avoid pruning the tree to shape it, instead allowing the tree’s natural flame-like structure to grow as it will.

Pests and diseases

A few common insect pests may be found on the Hollywood juniper, including aphids, bagworms, and scale insects. A healthy plant can usually fend off minor infestations. Organic insecticidal soaps may also be helpful. Hollywood junipers may infrequently experience tip or needle blight, and they are also susceptible to cedar-apple rust. Root rot occasionally occurs, but this is mainly when the shrub is planted in soil that drains poorly.

Achieving maximum results

If you are looking for a plant that can be formed into a rigid, box-like hedge, you’ll want to give the Hollywood juniper a pass. The strength of this cultivar is in the pleasantly unkempt, unpredictable branching structure, which can add great form to an otherwise staid landscape. When mature, the shrub needs little extra care, but you will do much to ensure that it has a long life if you pamper it when young. Moist, fertile soil is a good start, although the Hollywood Juniper dislikes standing water more than most evergreens. A single spring feeding with a balanced plant food is enough to nourish it. Your only job with this easy-care plant is to monitor it for insects or disease pressure and allow it to grow into a scene-stealing element in your garden.

FAQs

How big does a Hollywood juniper get?

The mature height of the Hollywood juniper is around 15 feet, with a mature width of 10 feet. It is not a fast-growing plant, and it may only put on 6 to 8 inches of new growth each year. Pruning to control the height of this evergreen is not generally recommended.

Where does the Hollywood juniper grow best?

The Hollywood juniper is able to grow throughout much of the continental U.S. It can handle temperatures down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit, making it suitable for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9. It grows as far north as the Pacific Northwest and coastal Maine and throughout the southern states, including most of Florida.

How is a Hollywood juniper best used in the garden?

As an evergreen, the Hollywood juniper offers four-season interest in the garden. It makes an excellent privacy screen when planted in a row at a property edge or by a patio. It can hold its own as a specimen planting and also works well as a foundation planting, although it should be planted at least 5 feet away from your home or any other structure. Its unique silhouette also works well in Asian-inspired gardens and rock gardens.
