Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘MonYur’

The Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress, Chamaecyparis obtusa 'MonYur,' is a beautifully compact evergreen cultivar with lovely, lace-like foliage that is light green at the tips, darkening to a deeper green near the center of the bush. This is a shrub that can stand alone as a specimen planting or work well when used in a mixed bed with other perennials or shrubs. It matures to a handsome loose pyramidal shape that tops out at six to eight feet, and it also excels as a container-grown plant. It's a perfect fit for smaller yards and landscapes but can hold its own in larger settings as well. It's tall enough to work as a hedge or windscreen, and when planted in staggered rows at a boundary line, it nicely shades your property from the neighbors. Here are a few more reasons to add this appealing cultivar to your garden:

  • Gracefully arching branches work well in Asian-themed gardens.
  • Easy care and not susceptible to disease or infestations.
  • Once established, it can handle moderately dry weather.

Planting instructions

Site your Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress where it will receive at least six hours of direct sunlight a day and in soil that drains well. Unpot your shrub and tease out any encircling roots, which can girdle the tree and slowly kill it. Dig a hole that’s as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Place the shrub in the hole, spreading out the roots. Holding it upright and steady, fill in around the roots with topsoil, tamping down as you go to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly. Apply a two to three-inch layer of organic mulch such as bark chips around the root zone to conserve moisture and hinder weed growth but keep it from touching the trunk to avoid problems with rot.

Watering and nutrients

When newly planted, water your Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress several times a week. Once it’s established and you see signs of robust new growth on the branches, you can taper back on watering to once a week. If you’re not sure if it needs water or not, check the soil about two inches below the surface — if it’s dry there, give your shrub a drink. If you’re experiencing very dry or hot weather, increase watering. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer that’s designed for evergreens or for landscape trees and shrubs. A 10-10-10 formula is one good option.

Pruning

Monitor your shrub for dead, diseased or damaged limbs, and prune these out whenever you see them. Other than that, you can leave the tree unpruned for a loose, pyramidal shape with softly arching branches, or you can prune lightly in early spring for a more formal look.

Pests, diseases, and animals

The Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress is not prone to any diseases and is unlikely to attract insect infestations. One insect that occurs occasionally is the juniper scale insect. A healthy shrub can fight off infestations with little problems. If pest pressure is severe, consider releasing beneficial insects such as ladybugs or lacewings to fight them. Horticultural oil can also be used to control pests. The only disease that impacts these shrubs is juniper tip blight, which causes brown tips on the foliage. This fungal disease can be controlled with a fungicide. Prune out any affected branches. Always water at the base of the trunk and keep the area around the root zone free of leaf litter and other debris.

Achieving maximum results

One way to achieve maximum results is to consider planting your Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress in a container, thus expanding its use to placement on decks and around pools or other paved areas. This cultivar adapts well to container growth. Choose a pot that’s roughly twice the size of the root ball and that has good drainage holes in the bottom. Use good-quality potting soil and plant as per our directions above. Keep in mind that pot-grown plants tend to need more watering than those grown in the ground, as well as more regular fertilizing.

FAQs

Where can I grow a Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress

This sturdy cultivar grows well throughout most of the contiguous U.S. It can handle temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit, and thus can grow outdoors in USDA hardiness zones four through eight. That means it grows as far north as coastal New England and as far south as northern Florida and all but the most southern regions of Texas.

How big does this cultivar get?

The Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress is a relatively slow grower but should achieve a height of six to eight feet within a decade. Its mature width is three to four feet. If grown in a container, it may be slightly smaller. When planting it in multiples, allow for two to three feet between each shrub unless you want it to form a hedge. If that's the case, they can be somewhat closer together.

How is this shrub best used in the garden or landscape?

The Jade Waves™ Fernspray False Cypress is an excellent mid-sized specimen bush, well-suited to use in mixed beds of perennials and other shrubs. It can also serve as an attractive foundation planting, sited several feet away from your home or other structure. Its fern-like foliage works well in Asian or contemporary gardens and its compact size makes it a perfect choice for smaller urban yards.
